How to Convert Butter Measurements

Convert grams to US cups

Cups = Grams ÷ 227

Example: 100 g butter ÷ 227 = 0.4405 US cups.

Convert sticks to grams

Grams = Sticks × 113.5

Example: 3 US sticks × 113.5 = 340.5 grams.

For butter dry weight conversions, 1 ounce = approximately 28.35 grams and 1 pound = approximately 453.59 grams. For standard US butter measurements, 1 cup equals 16 tablespoons, 48 teaspoons or 2 sticks.

US Cups, Metric Cups and Imperial Cups for Butter

Recipes may use different cup sizes depending on their country or publication. The calculator scales the butter weight for the selected cup volume from the stated 227-gram US cup basis.

Metric and imperial cup values are volume-scaled estimates. When a package provides grams, use the printed weight for the most precise conversion.

How to Measure Butter

Butter is easier to measure accurately than many dry ingredients because standard US sticks are wrapped with measurement markings. A kitchen scale remains the best option when a recipe specifies grams or when the butter is packaged as a block.

Use wrapper markings for sticks. One US stick is typically divided into 8 tablespoon portions, so you can slice off 1 tablespoon, 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup without a measuring cup.

Weigh blocks or irregular pieces. Place a bowl on a scale, tare it to zero and add butter until you reach the desired grams.

Measure melted butter after melting only when instructed. Recipes that specify “melted butter” generally intend the butter to be melted before it is incorporated; a liquid measuring cup can help when the recipe gives a volume.

Do not confuse butter with spreads. Whipped butter, tub spreads and reduced-fat buttery products may have different density and water content than standard butter.

Salted vs. Unsalted Butter

Use the same practical measurement conversion for standard salted and unsalted butter. The meaningful recipe difference is the added salt and, depending on the brand, small compositional differences.

European-Style or Cultured Butter

Higher-fat or cultured butters can behave differently in baking. When precision matters, follow a recipe’s specified butter type and measure it by weight.

Which Butter Measurement Should You Use?

US Stick-Based Recipes

1 stick: use 1/2 cup, 8 tablespoons or about 113.5 grams.
2 sticks: use 1 cup, 16 tablespoons or about 227 grams.
1 pound: use 4 sticks or about 454 grams.

Gram-Based Recipes

Measure directly: a scale avoids rounding between ounces and cup fractions.
Imported blocks: convert from the package gram weight rather than estimating sticks.
Melted butter: measure in the form specified in the recipe instructions.
